What is EV3?

LEGO® MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Core Set is a hands-on,solution that engages students with the help of resources to design, build and program their creations which in turn develops skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.

It has a building set which supports two students and it comes with a guide,video tutorials and lesson plans for students and educators.

Set Specification

The set includes a EV3 Intelligent Brick, a compact and powerful programmable computer that makes it possible to control motors and collect sensor feedback using the intuitive icon-based programming and data logging software that is included in the set.

The EV3 has a  Monochrome LCD display of 178*128 pixel,64 MB RAM, 16 MB flash, it also has a USB host port,it can also be connected through bluetooth and has an option of dongle and USB port for wifi connectivity. 

The "EV" designation refers to the "evolution" of the Mindstorms product line. "3" refers to the fact that it is the third generation of computer modules - first was the RCX and the second was the NXT. It was officially announced on January 4, 2013, and was released in stores on September 1, 2013. The education edition was released on August 1, 2013.There are many competitions using this set, including the FIRST LEGO League Challenge and the World Robot Olympiad, sponsored by LEGO.

At its core EV3 encourages playful experimentation where users can bring their idea to life whether it's a robot that can navigate a maze or a machine to solve a Rubik’s cube.The hands on nature of EV3 allows students to engage making their ideas more concrete and understandable.

EV3 helps students to learn through discovery,as they build and program their robot the students can come across a number of different challenges and will tend to solve problems on their own,this inculcates skills sets in the students such as problem solving and critical thinking.

People may tend to think programming to be difficult but with EV3  programming becomes an easy to learn tool with its drag-and-drop interface,it also becomes more accessible for people of all ages..
